White Water and Ocean Rafting

White Water Rafting is a very exciting and thrilling water sport using an inflatable rubber ‘raft’ usually between 3.5 – 6 metres (11-20 ft) long and 1.8 – 2.5 m (6-8 ft) wide.  They usually hold 4-12 paddlers and vary in shape from a symmetrical shape steered with a paddle at the stern to an asymmetrical design with a rudder controlling the raft.  White or rough water results in the ultimate thrill of this activity which has been popular since the mid 1980s.

As whitewater rafting can be a dangerous sport, particularly if basic safety precautions are not observed, certain measures and strict regulations regarding procedures and equipment are now in place for rafting business operators.

 
Other risks involved with the sport include fallen trees, dams, hidden rocks, strong currents and high waterfalls.  However, using experienced guides and legislated procedures the overall risk is low and thousands enjoy this activity annually.
